If you’ve ever wished you could build smarter, more flexible automations for your business—without needing a computer science degree—Make.com’s new AI Agents Beta might just be your new favorite tool. I’ve spent the time researching this feature so you don’t have to, and I’m excited to break it down in a way that’s easy to understand, even if you’re not a techie.

Let’s dive in!

What Are Make.com AI Agents?

In simple terms, Make.com’s AI Agents are like supercharged digital assistants that can handle complex tasks, make decisions, and coordinate actions across different apps and platforms. Think of them as the next step up from traditional automations: instead of just following a straight line of “if this, then that,” AI Agents can actually think a little, remember what you’ve told them, and choose the best tool for the job.

How Does Pricing Work?

One of the first questions I had (and I’m sure you do too) was about pricing. The good news: there’s no extra cost for using AI Agents in Make.com. You’ll keep paying the same as you do now for your operations. The only thing to note is that you’ll need to provide your own API key for the language model (like OpenAI’s GPT-4.1), so you’ll cover those costs directly. But otherwise, it’s business as usual.

Should You Use an AI Agent or a Regular Automation?

Before you jump in, it’s important to know when you actually need an AI Agent. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • Does your workflow need complex decision-making? If you need something that can handle lots of “if this, then that” logic, or make choices based on different inputs, an AI Agent is probably the way to go.

  • Does it need to coordinate multiple steps intelligently? If your process needs to remember context across steps or adapt as it goes, that’s a job for an agent.

  • Does it need to use different tools? For example, if you want your assistant to check your email, update your calendar, and send a message on Telegram—all in one go—an agent can handle that.

  • Does it need to remember conversations? If you want to have a chat with your automation and have it remember what you said earlier, agents are built for that.

  • Does it need to work across different platforms? If your workflow jumps between apps and needs to evaluate what to do next, agents are a great fit.

If your process is simple and linear, a regular automation might be all you need. But for anything more complex, AI Agents are worth exploring.

How Do You Build an AI Agent in Make.com?

Let’s walk through the process, step by step:

1. Decide What You Need:
First, figure out if you need an agent or just a regular automation. Use the questions above as your guide.

2. Create the Agent:
Head over to Make.com, click “Create Agent,” and give it a name (and maybe an emoji for fun). Choose your language model (like GPT-4.1), and connect your API key from OpenAI.

3. Set the System Prompt:
This is like giving your agent its “personality” and instructions. You can use ChatGPT to help you write a good prompt. For example, you might say, “You are a personal assistant who can search the internet and draft emails.”

4. Choose a Trigger:
Decide what will start your agent. It could be a message on Telegram, a webhook, or something else. For example, you might set it up so that when you send a message to your Telegram bot, the agent springs into action.

5. Build the Tools (Scenarios):
Here’s where Make.com’s approach is a bit different from other platforms like N8N. You’ll create separate “scenarios” for each tool your agent might use—like searching the internet or creating a draft email. Think of these as the agent’s toolkit.

6. Connect the Tools to the Agent:
Once your tools are ready, link them to your agent. This way, your agent can reach for the right tool at the right time.

7. Test and Tweak:
Run your agent, see how it performs, and make adjustments as needed. You can set limits on how many times it can call itself, how much memory it uses, and more.

How Does Make.com Compare to N8N?

If you’ve used N8N before, you’ll notice some differences. N8N lets you build everything in one place, and you can see exactly what your agent is doing at each step—like tracking your Uber driver on a map. Make.com, on the other hand, has you build separate scenarios for each tool, and you don’t get as much real-time visibility into what the agent is doing behind the scenes.

Personally, I’d love to see Make.com make it easier to build and manage tools all in one place, and give us more transparency into what the agent is up to. But both platforms are powerful, and which one you choose will depend on your preferences and needs.

Real-World Use Cases

So, what can you actually do with AI Agents? Here are some of the top use cases I’ve seen from my community:

  • Customer support and experience

  • Operations and workflow automation

  • Sales and marketing tasks

  • Finance and compliance checks

  • Product development

  • Human resources processes

Basically, if there’s a repetitive or complex task in your business, there’s a good chance an AI Agent can help.

Final Thoughts

Make.com’s AI Agents are still in beta, so there are a few quirks—like memory sometimes working better than other times, or not always being able to see exactly what’s happening under the hood. But the team is actively seeking feedback and working to improve things.

If you’re already using Make.com, you can start experimenting with AI Agents today and see how they fit into your workflows. And if you’re new to automation, this is a great time to jump in and see what’s possible.

I’ll be chatting with the Make.com team soon, so if you have questions or feedback, let me know! In the meantime, have fun building, and let me know what you create.
