So, OpenAI says ChatGPT has 400 million weekly users. That’s a huge number. Like, “bigger than the total population of the US” huge. 🎉 But hold on—how are they counting this?

Are we talking about real, actual humans, or is this number inflated with API calls, Microsoft Copilot users, and ChatGPT fans logging in from five different devices?

Let’s break it down—because something smells a little too impressive here.

What’s Actually Behind That 400M Number?

OpenAI hasn’t spilled the details on how they’re counting, but based on how things usually work, here are some possibilities:

1. Real People Logging In? (Or the Same Guy 10 Times?)

If OpenAI is counting unique users, that could mean:
✅ Free & paid users logging into ChatGPT
✅ Developers using OpenAI models via API
✅ ChatGPT Enterprise & Team users

The key question: Are multiple sessions from the same user counted once or every time they open a new tab? 🤔

2. API Calls = Users? That’s Sneaky.

OpenAI’s models power tons of AI tools, including:
✅ Microsoft Copilot (formerly Bing Chat)
✅ AI chatbots in customer service
✅ Third-party apps running on OpenAI’s API

If OpenAI is counting API requests as users, that’s like saying every Google search makes you a “Google power user.” A single person using multiple AI-powered apps could be counted several times.

3. The Same Person on Multiple Devices = Extra Users?

If you log in from your phone, laptop, and iPad, are you one user or three?
And if someone uses ChatGPT without an account, are they part of the 400 million too?

4. Microsoft Copilot Users—OpenAI’s or Microsoft’s?

Let’s not forget, Microsoft Copilot (aka Bing Chat) runs on OpenAI models.

So… is OpenAI counting millions of Microsoft users as its own? Because if so, that number is looking a little bloated. 😏

My Thoughts: We Love AI, But Let’s Be Real.

The AI world loves big numbers, but without clear definitions, they don’t tell the full story.

So, OpenAI have 400 million weekly users? Really? Or are we counting every API ping, Microsoft user, and person who clicked "try again" five times in a row? 🤨

Because if that’s the case, I might be personally responsible for at least 1,000 of those. 😂

Users equal value and impact—that’s exactly why ChatGPT released this impressive number in the first place: to make a statement. But without full clarity on whether it’s true growth or just fuel for the hype, we can’t really tell. What we do need is transparency on how this number is calculated—otherwise, it’s just another AI mystery.

Even if you’re not aiming for 400 million users, I’m pretty sure I can still help. 😉

Let’s talk AI—minus the inflated numbers. 🚀
