One of the most important parts of an SEO strategy is performing a content audit and deciding which pages need to be refreshed and upgraded. In many cases, a quality content upgrade can significantly improve the rankings and overall performance of a given page or blog.
In this article, I'll demonstrate how you can easily use AI to decide what to add to the page and which keywords to include in your new content.
The process
First, choose the article you want to upgrade, and select at least 2-4 top results on Google under the main keyword of the given article.
Then, go to ChatGPT and type in the following prompt: I want to upgrade the content of my article about the topic "name of the topic". Here's the article URL: "put your URL". Please analyze the competitor articles below of that given topic and suggest at least 10 secondary keywords close by relevance to the main topic. Here are the resources: "Put here a list of 2-4 URLs".
Once you get the list, copy it and paste it into SEMRush's "Keyword Overview" tool (this is just an example - you can do the same also with AHREFS, SE Ranking, etc.). The goal is to select the keywords that, on one hand, have some volume, and on the other hand, even if they have none (or very little), they are still highly relevant to the topic, and by that, they can strengthen the context of the article in the search engines.
Once you choose the list of keywords, copy them and type in the following prompt: I want to upgrade the content of my article about the topic "name of the topic". Here's the article URL: "Put the article URL". Please suggest a content outline that contains at least 3-4 new sections and 10 FAQs, and include the following keywords in the outline: "Put here the keywords list."
P.S. - I highly recommend adding as well a few additional keywords that are relevant to the business's core offering. For instance, in the example given below, I also added the keyword "work in Canada", which is closely related to one of the business’s products.
Now that you have the output, it's time to go over the outline, do some edits if needed, and decide which new sections and FAQs you want to include in the content upgrade outline.
To do so, consider the following:
-
Check your existing article - Ensure that each new section or FAQ hasn’t been discussed in the article already (we want to add value to the reader by adding only new content).
-
Which new sections or FAQs in the suggested outline align with the business’s core offering? Which ones are closely related to the end result that the potential client might get by consuming the business’s products or services?
-
Which topics are covered by the competitors, in one way or another, but not yet in your existing article?
That’s it!
Now that you have chosen the topics you want to add to your article, put them in a simple Google spreadsheet:
-
URL
-
Main keyword
-
Additional keywords
-
New sections
-
FAQs
-
Additional resources (for example, competitors’ articles).
Send it to your writer, and you’re done!
P.S.
Don’t forget to change the publish date once the article is published with the new content, and re-index it on Google Search Console.
Good luck!
