Lately, my partner has been curious about what I do in UX. So I showed him part of my workflow, how sometimes I start with a really rough wireframe or a general concept. I usually have a sense of what I want to create, but before diving in, I like to gather some inspiration.

So I opened up Figma and showed him the design direction I was heading in. In this case, I needed to design something that’s somewhere between a button and a card, with an “Update” button that looks sexy and makes you want to click it.

While working, I talked him through what I was doing and thinking, and at one point I said, “Okay, now I’m going to head over to Mobbin to collect some inspiration.”
And then he goes, “Why Mobbin? You’ve got Deep Research on Perplexity and ChatGPT!”

He didn’t even finish the sentence before I started laughing 😂

I told him, there is no way that they will give me better or faster results than Mobbin.

With Mobbin I can filter by components and keywords and get dozens of design references in seconds.

That helps me make a decision that’s as close as possible to our actual user data and the system we’re designing for.

But then! I got curious. I genuinely wanted to see if Deep Research could be useful for UX inspiration and ideation.

So I gave it a shot.

I went to both tools and asked: “Show me examples of system screens with a version update button.”

And then I waited.
Because it takes time.

In the meantime, I went to Mobbin, grabbed some inspiration, and started designing.

When I came back to Perplexity still loading.

ChatGPT actually gave me results, but they were from mobile apps. So I refined the prompt and asked for examples from SaaS systems.

Then it gave me a few images that looked like they were straight from Dribbble cool-looking,

but clearly not real systems. No technical feasibility, and honestly, pretty poor UX.

By the time I finished designing, Perplexity was still loading, and I’d already abandoned ChatGPT.

All in all the future might be here, but we’re not quite there yet when it comes to design inspiration.

Having said that, who knows? Maybe in a year or two the tech will catch up.

Until then thank goodness for Mobbin.
